This other day my friend asked me about my Christmas plans. I had not made any plans by then so instead of responding to her question, I turned the tables on her and asked her to share her plans. So she shared how she was afraid she was going to have to spend Christmas alone because her family lives in another city and she cant travel due to work responsibilities.
Looking at her I could see how distressed she was about the possibility of spending Christmas alone. So we started brainstorming ideas of some of the things one can do to enjoy Christmas when you are spending it alone. We didn’t go far with the list as the conversation steered towards other topics but it is something that stayed with me.
What can one do to enjoy Christmas when you are spending it alone?
So today’s post is about things you can do to enjoy spending Christmas alone.
If you are spending Christmas alone for whatever reason, read on and grab a tip or two so that this year’s Christmas still remains epic.
7 Ideas for spending Christmas alone
Attend a Christmas Carol Service
At the heart of the Christmas season is the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. As such, most (if not all) churches will usually hold a service on Christmas or on Christmas Eve. So if you’re unsure of what to do on Christmas, consider attending a Christmas service at a local church near you.
I know Christmas carol services are fun because I am a huge fan of them. Am sure you will have quite a good time singing and interacting with other people. The best part is, it is a great way of putting Jesus Christ at the center of your Christmas.
Binge watch Christmas movies
I love watching Christmas movies, even when it’s not Christmas season (don’t judge me). There is just something special about them and all the great lessons about family, friendship, love and God that they teach us. And Christmas movies are entertaining too. So make yourself a big bowl of popcorn and binge watch as many Christmas movies as you can. Then thank me later.
Prepare a feast for yourself
Or you could make yourself a feast. Food is another important thing when it comes to Christmas. One of my fondest memories from when I was young is of my big sisters preparing Christmas lunch in my mother’s kitchen and we were all laughing at silly things.
There is just something about food that brings such joy into homes, even if there is only one person in the home. So prepare a feast of all your favorite foods and enjoy!
Just because you are spending Christmas alone doesn’t mean you have to spend Christmas alone. Volunteering – spending time with a local charity, with orphans etc. – is another great idea for spending your Christmas. Not only will you have other people to spend time with, there is also nothing as rewarding as doing something for someone and just lending a helping hand. With Christmas being about Christ who gave His life for us, Volunteering is a great way to honor Him and follow His example of selflessness.
Attend a Christmas Show
And if where you live is anything like Lilongwe, I bet there will be numerous events happening on 25th. If spending time indoors on Christmas does not appeal to you, you can check out what’s going on in your area. Attend a music concert, a drama show or something. Last year my friends and I went to a music concert for Christmas and we had such a great time.
Take a trip
Do you have a place that you have always wanted to go to but never had the opportunity to? This is the perfect time to take that trip. It is going to be such a great opportunity for you to appreciate the town or nature and just experience something new. Also, that’s one thing to tick off that bucket list. Yay!!
Get cozy with a good book
Because y’all know I love books, the last idea just had to be something to do with book. Get a great Christmas novel in advance and find that comfy cozy spot in your home. Make yourself some snacks and some hot drink and get lost in the pages. (Sigh)
These are just some of the things you can do to rock your solo Christmas. What do you think of them? Have other ideas that would help someone have a blast while spending Christmas alone? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
