5 Things you need to do at the beginning of every year to have the best year ever

things you need to do at the beginning of a new year

It’s the beginning of another year. This means it’s that time of the year when we make new year’s resolutions, an attempt to do better than the past year.

We all want to be better, do better than the year just ended but how do we ensure that that happens?

This is where this post comes in. Preparation.

You have to prepare and plan for the new year if you are to have a better year than 2020.

I know you don’t want to fail in this new year. I don’t want you to fail in this new year. I want you to live your best life and have more joy, happiness, and success than you did last year. So, I am sharing with you 5 things you need to do at the beginning of this year to set yourself for the best year ever.

1. Review your past year

When I was in secondary school, history was my absolute favorite subject. In our history class, we had a phrase we loved to say, some would call it a motto. We would say the more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future. Later, I realized that this quote was first spoken by Theodore Roosevelt, who was the 26th president of the United States of America. But in that classroom, we owned it you would think it was our original saying.

Now that am all grown up, I remember this phrase and am forced to acknowledge the wisdom in Roosevelt’s words.

Most times as people we are eager to move into the future without first looking back to the past. But before you set your 2021 resolutions and goals and move in full throttle pursuing them, I ask that you do a review of 2020 first.

Look at the goals and resolutions you had set for 2020 and whether or not you achieved them.

If you achieved them, what factors helped you. How can you harness these factors to ensure they work for you again in this new year?

If you didn’t achieve your set goal, what factors hindered you? What can you do to ensure these factors don’t disrupt you again in this new year? Where can you do better?

As you review your past year, determine what needs to go with you into the new year, and what needs to stay. Could be habits, what habit do you need to unlearn and what habits do you need to continue with. Could be relationships. Who needs to continue being part of your life, and who do you need to part ways with.

Review your past year before you start making preparations for this new year.

Remember, the more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.

2. Set new year’s goals

After reviewing and taking stock of the past year, now you can start looking to the future by setting the new year’s goals.

When setting your goals, look at your vision for your life, and set yearly goals that will help you get there.

Few tips for when you are setting your goals:

First, make sure you set goals that will motivate you to pursue them. To ensure you set motivating goals, ask yourself the why to the goal. Why do you want to achieve this goal? Why does it matter?

Second, your goals should be SMART.

S- Specific

M- Measurable

T-Time Bound

Lastly, when setting goals, always bear in mind the purpose of your life. You want to set goals that are in line with God’s purpose for your life. This will protect you from running races that aren’t yours.

3. Make a vision board

After setting your goals, the next thing you need to do is to create a vision board.

A vision board is a visual representation of your goals and aspirations that serves as a source of motivation.

The vision board you create at the beginning of the new year will be a pal that will fuel you towards pursuing your goals for the year.

The vision board will help you in two ways:

First, it will help you be clear about your goals. Since a vision board is a collage of images and quotes representing your vision and goals, it forces you to move past casual thinking of your goals and forces you to think of clear pictures of your goals.

Second, vision boards help in making you focused on your goals. A vision board serves as a constant visual reminder of your goals. It constantly reminds you of why you started, thereby energizing you to not give up in the course of pursuing your goals

4. Break down your goals into specific actions

Vision boards are pictorial representatives of the destination i.e., what you want to achieve. So, after setting yourself up for constant motivation to keep pushing in the year, you need to sit down and determine what exactly it is that you intend to do for you to achieve your goals.

Specificity is key.

Here you break your goals into smaller bite-size goals with time-bound deliverables.

I currently have a career in project management. And in project management, we have what we call a log-frame. Basically, a log-frame contains specific activities that you intend to implement to achieve the main project goal. Through the use of a log-frame, we can see how various activities (that might seem random at a glance) all feed into each other to ensure the achievement of a grand goal.

I ask that you employ the same thinking in your personal life. Look at your goals and determine what exactly it is that you need to do to ensure you achieve them. Plan your year in such a way that you will be spending your time, resources, and energy on things that will feed into your goals.

Remember, specificity is key.

5. Embrace a positive mindset for the year

Proverbs 23:7

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he

This bible verse shows us just how powerful our minds are. We are who we are because of the thoughts we have, the mindset we have.

If we carry a failure mindset going into the new year, we will fail even if we successfully did the 4 things above.

The power of our minds cannot be overemphasized.

So, as we start this new year, work on your mind. Read and watch things that will energize you and help you believe in yourself.

Remember, you cannot soar beyond your mindset

Last thoughts

I believe that doing these 5 things at the start of this new year will help you make this year the best year yet. I know 2020 wasn’t a good year for a lot of people but I pray that 2021 is better for you.

My prayer is that this year you will have clear goals and that you will tirelessly work on achieving them and not give up.

Furthermore, I hope that you will remember to leave room for God to surprise you this year. Don’t be too set in your ways this year that you won’t let God steer you.

Provers 19:21

There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel- that will stand.

And finally, sharing is caring! Share this post with a friend whom you would like for them to have the best year of their life too.

Till next time,

Save for later
